Front-end Engineer
You’d be joining as a senior member of a young, established team with a strong software engineering culture. Our developers enjoy working in a broad range of roles and there are opportunities to get involved in all aspects of software development and delivery should you want to.
You would suit this position if:
You’ve worked on at least one web project of significant complexity. You’ve thought about the pain points around maintaining large JavaScript codebases.
You know what jQuery, backbone and SASS are and when they are useful.
You know how to architect for performance and can reason about trade-offs. Slow web sites make you sad.
You are already building mobile web applications or keen to learn.
You like to be responsible for UI design and improving the user experience.
You’ve led a small development team before or have an interest in taking a step in that direction.
It’s a bonus if:
You’ve built native mobile applications.
You’re familiar with ASP.NET / C#.
You know the difference between relational and non-relational data stores and their appropriate use cases. You know what eventual consistency is and what the implications are.

Software Quality Analyst/Agile Tester – Latest Technology for Cloud-Based Software – Bristol, South West
Salary: £30,000 - £38,000 plus full benefits package
Location: Bristol, South West, Avon (Gloucestershire and Somerset)
THE COMPANY AND SITUATION:
Our very exciting client is one of the fastest-growing cloud software companies in Europe. They are the providers of an innovative, unique, cloud-based e-commerce software offering. They are seeking a proactive, experienced Agile software tester/Software Quality Analyst with enthusiasm for software testing to join a friendly multi-skilled Agile development team and devise innovative tests.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
The experience required for this role is as follows:
• A minimum of 3 years of commercial experience in Exploratory Software Testing, including a thorough understanding of exploratory testing techniques
• Your testing experience should include a mix of both manual and automated testing, with a bias towards manual testing
• Experience of working in an Agile environment
• Enthusiasm for testing!
Please note the above criteria are essential – you require all of the above to be eligible for this role.
Desirable, but not essential, is experience in as many of the following as possible:
• Some experience of Linux or Unix
• Experience of an automated UI testing framework (e.g. Cucumber , Watir-Webdriver, Selenium or Robot Framework)
• A good grasp of relational databases
• Experience of automated web-service testing frameworks
• Experience of generic testing frameworks (e.g. FitNesse)
• SQL knowledge
They are seeking the calibre of person who can look at a user story, notice gaps that no-one else has and then come up with “devious” and “ingenious” software tests that reveal unexpected issues! Can you do that? When have you done that in the past?
THE ROLE:
By “exploratory” software testing they mean manual software testing, but not simply testing against scripts: They don’t do that as this is an Agile environment. The crux of the role is twofold: Perform in-depth exploratory testing on user stories plus post-release smoke checks, consequently helping their software product development team generate high-quality user stories. Secondly, implement automated functional and regression tests for user interfaces and web services.
THE OPPORTUNITY:
This is one of fastest-growing cloud software companies in Europe, therefore the career potential here is huge, with a culture of promoting from within.
For technical staff, the attraction here is the technology they use in-house. Because they are a relatively new and growing company, they are getting to use a lot of the newest and latest software before other companies generally do. Some examples of this are Zend; connectors for eBay, Amazon, Magento and Shopify; Hazelcast with ActiveMQ and RESTful web services. Consequently, there is also still scope to change and mould the way the technology team grows: They are not yet “set in their ways” as can be the case in other long-established companies.
This is a great opportunity to join at an early stage of the company still building their UI testing side. It’s not in place already and merely needs maintaining as in some companies; here you can assist them in actually building their UI framework. You will be working as a member of their Agile development team and therefore very much a part of the process.
Additionally, this is an opportunity to work with a great bunch of sociable people – this is not your typical “tech” company! It’s important that you’re sociable because they want people who will join in with their regular social activities, at least once a week and often more!
As their VP of sales put it: “We have the San Francisco-style, fast-paced, tech start-up culture in sunny Bristol!”
Location: Bristol, South West, Avon (Gloucestershire and Somerset)
